MEDICARE HOSPICE BENEFIT

Prescription Drugs - the hospice benefit covers 95% of medication costs for drugs related to the terminal illness, for pain relief and symptom management.

Routine Home Care - patients are at home or living in a nursing facility under the care of hospice, receiving less than 8 hours of care per day.

Continuous Home Care - this care is provided during brief periods of crisis to maintain patients at home. A continuous home care day is at least eight hours long and consists predominantly of continuous nursing care.

Respite Care - hospice patients may receive respite care in approved facilities on a short-term basis (not more than five days at a time).

General Inpatient Care - patients may be admitted to approved facilities for pain control or acute symptom management that cannot be controlled at home.  This level of care may be provided in a hospital, a hospice inpatient facility, or a skilled nursing facility.
