Chaplain Karen Diefendorf Presents Workshop in South Korea
August 22, 2016
Chaplain Karen Diefendorf was invited to present a workshop on "Hospice and Faith" at the recent International Convention of Christian Churches and Churches of Christ in South Korea. While most attendees were from South Korea, many attendees came from as far away as Brazil, Kenya, Japan and the USA. Over 180 people attended the workshop with many having to find seats on the floor.
Karen presented a study on Korean hospice as background and then shared how the local church can use hospice as an extension of its ministry. Currently Korean hospice is used only for cancer and provided mostly in the hospitals because of the way their National Insurance pays. Only the poor receive hospice in their homes and this is usually delivered through churches and other helping organizations.
Chaplain Diefendorf, assisted by a translator, followed the presentation with a question and answer session which was well received and furthered ideas about how attendees could engage their government representatives in making hospice more robust in Korea.
